The scientific name of dholes and its meaning

 

The scientific name of the dhole is Cuon alpinus. This means “a dog of the Alps”. “Cuon” is derived from the Greek word “κυων” which means “a dog” and the Latin word “alpinus” means “alpine”. 

 

The dhole is also called the Indian wild dog, Asiatic wild dog or Red dog.
